In the Pride Lands of Africa, a young lion prince named Simba is presented to the gathered animals by Rafiki, the mandrill shaman and advisor to his father, King Mufasa. Mufasa shows Simba the Pride Lands and explains to him the responsibilities of kingship and the “circle of life”, which connects all living things. Mufasa’s younger brother, Scar, covets the throne and plots to get rid of Mufasa and Simba, so he may become king.

Though upset with Simba for disobeying him and putting himself and Nala in danger, Mufasa forgives him and explains that the great kings of the past watch over them from the night sky, from which he will one day watch over Simba. Meanwhile, Scar, who planned the whole thing, visits the hyenas and convinces them to help him overthrow Mufasa in exchange for hunting rights in the Pride Lands.

Scar lures Simba and Nala into a gorge and tells them to run away while he deals with Mufasa. Simba and Nala escape, but Mufasa is not so lucky. Scar leads Mufasa to a cliff and pushes him off, causing him to fall to his death. Scar then tells the Pride Lands that Simba was responsible for Mufasa’s death. Simba is overcome with guilt and runs away from the Pride Lands.
